Polish Citizenship by Descent

Poland allows descendants of Polish nationals (including Polish Jews) to apply for citizenship in certain cases. Depending on your family history, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship if one of your ancestors was Polish or Polish-Jewish. Polish Citizenship by Descent (Including for Jewish Poles)

Despite being almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, capital city Warsaw is the thriving business and cultural center of Poland. Holders of a Polish passport have access to over 70% of the global GDP and can travel to more than 80% (or over 180 destinations) of the world without needing a visa in advance.

You can apply for Polish citizenship by descent if you have Polish (including Polish-Jewish) ancestry. As a citizen of Poland, you can live, work, study, and retire in this Central European country and anywhere else in the EU and Switzerland at any time.

Requirements of Polish citizenship by descent

Conditions for descendants

The direct descendants of a Polish (or Jewish Pole) ancestor are eligible to apply for citizenship:

  • Children
  • Grandchildren
  • Great-grandchildren

Conditions for ancestors

You may qualify for citizenship by descent if you can prove that at least one Polish ancestor:

  • Was born in Poland (or one of the former Polish territories)
  • Resided in Poland after 1920 (with some exceptions)
  • Maintained their Polish citizenship until after 1920 and at the time of your birth

Since there are many ways to lose citizenship, you must prove domicile with original Polish-issued documents.

Applications for citizenship by descent must be accompanied by substantive original documentation supporting your ancestral claim. Where available, such documents include the ancestor’s:

  • ID or passport
  • Birth certificate

The process for acquiring Polish citizenship through descent typically takes eight to ten months, but it can vary significantly.
